How Voice Assistants Listen
Voice assistants like Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, and Google Assistant are designed to be always listening for their wake word. The device continuously processes audio locally, waiting for the trigger phrase: "Alexa," "Hey Siri," or "Hey Google." When the wake word is detected, the device begins recording and sends the audio to cloud servers for processing.
This architecture means there is a microphone in your home that is perpetually active. While manufacturers emphasize that only audio after the wake word is transmitted, the reality is more nuanced. Wake word detection is imperfect. False activations happen regularly, triggered by words that sound similar to the wake word, background noise, or conversations on television. Each false activation sends a snippet of your private conversation to the company's servers.
Research has shown that smart speakers can be falsely activated dozens of times per day depending on the household environment. Each accidental activation captures audio that the user never intended to share.
What Gets Recorded and Stored
When a voice assistant activates, whether intentionally or accidentally, the audio recording is transmitted to cloud servers where it is processed by speech recognition algorithms. But the story does not end there. These recordings are stored on company servers, often indefinitely by default, associated with your user account.
Amazon retains Alexa voice recordings until you manually delete them or configure automatic deletion. Google stores Assistant recordings by default, with options to set automatic deletion after 3 or 18 months. Apple has taken a more privacy-forward approach, using random identifiers instead of Apple IDs for Siri data and retaining recordings for a shorter period.
Beyond voice recordings, these services also collect metadata including the time of each interaction, the device used, your location, linked account information, and the content of your requests. Over time, this creates a detailed profile of your habits, interests, health concerns (if you ask medical questions), financial situation (if you ask about purchases), and daily routine.
Human Review of Recordings
In 2019, reports revealed that all three major voice assistant companies employed human contractors to listen to and transcribe user recordings. Amazon, Apple, and Google all confirmed that human reviewers listened to a small percentage of voice interactions to improve speech recognition accuracy.
These revelations were alarming because they meant that intimate conversations, arguments, medical discussions, and other private moments captured by accidental activations were being heard by human employees. The recordings were generally anonymized, but they often contained enough contextual information to identify the speaker.
Since these revelations, all three companies have updated their policies. Apple now requires explicit opt-in for human review. Amazon and Google have added options to opt out. However, the underlying practice highlights a fundamental tension: improving voice recognition requires training data, and training data means someone or some system must process your actual voice recordings.
Configuring Privacy Settings by Platform
Amazon Alexa
Open the Alexa app, navigate to Settings, then Alexa Privacy. Here you can review and delete your voice history, enable automatic deletion (choose between 3 months or 18 months), and opt out of the "Help Develop New Features" program that allows human review of recordings. You can also turn off the use of your messages for machine learning improvements.
Consider disabling features you do not use. If you never make purchases through Alexa, disable voice purchasing. If you do not want Alexa calling and messaging, disable the communication features. Each feature you disable reduces your data footprint.
Apple Siri
Apple's approach is more privacy-oriented by default. Go to Settings, then Siri and Search on your iPhone or iPad. You can toggle off Listen for "Hey Siri" to prevent always-on listening. Under Analytics and Improvements, you can opt out of sharing Siri recordings with Apple. Apple uses a random identifier rather than your Apple ID for Siri interactions, and it processes many requests on-device rather than in the cloud.
Google Assistant
Open the Google Home app or visit myactivity.google.com. Under Web and App Activity, you can view, delete, and control your Assistant history. Enable auto-delete to remove recordings after 3 or 18 months. Under "Voice and Audio Activity," you can pause recording entirely, which limits some functionality but significantly improves privacy.
Google also allows you to delete recordings by saying "Hey Google, delete everything I said this week" directly to the device.
The Mute Button vs Software Off
Every smart speaker has a physical mute button that electronically disconnects the microphone. When the mute button is active, the device cannot listen for the wake word or any other audio. This is the most reliable way to ensure privacy when you want silence.
The mute button is superior to any software-based privacy setting because it operates at the hardware level. Software can be bypassed by bugs or malicious code, but a physically disconnected microphone cannot capture audio. Make a habit of muting your smart speakers during sensitive conversations, and consider unplugging them entirely when you are away for extended periods.
It is also worth noting that some smart displays include camera shutters in addition to microphone mute buttons. If your device has a camera, always use the physical shutter when the camera is not in use.
Making Informed Choices
Voice assistants provide genuine convenience, and their privacy implications do not necessarily mean you should avoid them entirely. The key is making informed decisions. Review and configure privacy settings on every voice-enabled device in your home. Use the mute button during private conversations. Periodically review and delete stored recordings. And remember that every question you ask your voice assistant is potentially being recorded, stored, and analyzed.
